Isabella of Castile

Blazing a trail for the powerful women rulers who came after her, Isabella of Castile was one of the more significant queens regnant in European history.  Her legacy, however, is a mixed one: though the Reconquista and the Voyages of Discovery ultimately made Spain the most powerful Empire in Europe, much that was good perished.  This lecture looked at Isabella’s unlikely rise to power, the issues of her day, which motivated her to take the decisions she did, and how the world changed because of her reign.
