Russia & The Romanovs

The Romanov Dynasty

The colorful Romanov dynasty continues to fascinate.

2018 marked the grisly centenary of the massacre of Nicholas II and his family at Ekaterinburg, which interestingly sparked far more interest inside Russia than did the previous year’s momentous 100th anniversary of the Russian Revolutions of 1917. One of the reasons the Romanovs are so compelling is that the world they lived in was rarified and, in the case of Nicholas II and his family, almost hermetically sealed.  The books below offer windows into this bygone world through biographies, autobiographies, studies of the period, and coffee table books of photographs.  Nicholas II and his family were keen photographers and left behind a wealth of candid shots of their life, which was tragically cut short.  You’ll find several albums of these photographs below.

This list grows each year as I review and enjoy new books on the dynasty, some in audio form, as well as films and TV series.  I hope you will enjoy them too.
